Carolyn Deitz Johnson 77 of Sylva passed away on Monday, June 1st. Born on September 26, 1942 she was the daughter of the late Medford Ransom Deitz and Hattie Harris Deitz; and the wife of the late Benny Burnell Johnson. Carolyn was also preceded in death by her sister, Pam Deitz Galloway. She is survived by three children; daughters, Teresa Johnson Orr and husband Danny Orr of Bryson City; Romona Johnson Monteith and husband Kevin Monteith of Sylva; a son, Alton Johnson and wife Anita Ball Johnson of Franklin. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; Sarah Orr Lawson and husband Tanner of Bryson City, Dana Carolyn Orr of Bryson City, Alan and Paige Monteith of Sylva, Olivia Johnson Wright and husband Eric of Franklin, Jessica, Elden, and Aiden Johnson of Franklin; and one great-grandson, Daniel Jude Lawson. One brother, Michael Deitz of Gainesville, GA also survives. She is also survived by two step grandchildren, Matthew Orr (Trina) and Jacob Monteith (Jazmyn) and four great-step grandchildren, Kelli and Adam Orr and Jaylee and Jordan Monteith. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. Carolyn loved family reunions, sewing, genealogy, and cooking for her family. A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 4th at 11:00 a.m. at Parris Cemetery with Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jackson County Genealogical Association, PO Box 480, Sylva, NC 28779.
