Suellen Mopps

Suellen Mopps, age 83, of Sylva, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 21, 2021. She was the wife of Wilbur Mopps and the daughter of the late Frank and Ellen Stogsdill.

Suellen was a member of Victory Baptist Church and taught school for over twenty-five years before retiring. She enjoyed reading, cooking, camping, and baking. She dearly loved her family.

Suellen is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Wilbur Mopps; three children, Kathy (Philip) Hall, Leigh Anne Riley, and David (Florentina) Mopps; two granddaughters, Olivia Dawn Mopps and Sarah Megan Hall; and two grandsons, Philip Eric Hall and Brandon Andrei Mopps. Also surviving are six great grandchildren and one sister, Sarah Jane McMillan.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, February 25, 2021 at Victory Baptist Church with Rev. Rusty Wolfrey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Mopps was my second-grade teacher at Colonial Christian School (later known as South Dade Baptist School) in Florida many years ago. I thought of her for no particular reason today, and when I looked her up on Google, I was saddened to learn that she passed away earlier this year. I would have liked to tell her again how special she was. She was truly the warmest, most motherly grade school teacher that any child could ever wish for. So much so that I came up with a silly nickname for her. I can't remember if I ever told it to her or kept it a secret, but that nickname was Mommy Mopps because she really did radiate a benevolence befitting a mother. She was patient and fair and loving at all times. Just being in her presence felt safe. Blessings to Wilbur, Kathy, Leigh, David, and all others who knew and loved her. I knew her for just one school year and I will never forget her. Emily

The Pugh Boys will greatly miss Sue Mopps. She and Wilbur were our daytrip companions nearly every time we came to Sylva. We were welcomed any time in their home and counted us as family. Love you 'mom' & Wilbur: Joe & Curtis
