Sullivan Sheppard III

Sullivan “Josh” Sheppard III, age 69, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 in Sylva, NC. He was born on December 31, 1948 in Montgomery, Alabama to Sullivan and Louise Sheppard. He is survived by his cherished wife Susan; daughter Holly Sheppard; daughter Haley Werle; son-in-law Bill Werle; granddaughter Amelia Werle; grandson Cade Werle and his sisters Peggy Oubre, Sally Ray and Martha Wallner. He is predeceased by his parents and brother Billy Sheppard.

Josh had a big personality, but an even bigger heart. He was a free spirit who lived life to the fullest. In his younger days, he loved a good party. He threw some legendary ones with bonfires, live music and more people than his house could handle.

Josh loved his family deeply and took pride in their achievements, no matter how big or small. He always said the best thing he ever did in life was marry Susan and become a father. He loved being Pop-Pop to Amelia and Cade. He enjoyed sharing his popsicles, giving them “pocket change” and especially big hugs that he called “tight sugar”.

One of the biggest accomplishments of Josh’s life was overcoming addiction. He took it one day at a time and was sober for 32 years. He was a sponsor to many and spent countless evenings sharing his story to others battling addiction. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Josh’s name to:  Gateway Community Services in Jacksonville, FL to help others have the success Josh had living a sober life.

Josh’s memory will be honored by his family privately, as he wished.

Sulli was my best friend Hollys dad. Holly and I have been friends for over 25 years so being around the Sheppard family was the norm. Sulli had a way of bringing laughter into any room. He had jokes, many, many, many jokes. Some I got and some I just laughed at to be polite. He had a special way of doing things to drive us crazy (he got a kick out of it) as teenagers like starting the lawn mower super early trying to wake us up or at 5-6 in the morning standing by Hollys open window yelling whipperwhill like a bird. As an adult these are stories/memories I LOVE and I tell as a part of my childhood and have told several times to friends and told last Saturday to my sister in fact, although she had heard the whipperwhill one before. Sulli was not my father but a second dad to say the least, he was supportive when I wanted to go to culinary school to be a baker and would help by calling me saying he has 20 dollars and wants me to make him some chocolates, which I always did. Anytime I would see him the first thing he would say is Suz where are my chocolates which i didnt mind , made me feel like I made good chocolates . Being around him you always knew how much he loved his family. Last time I saw him, which was a few months ago he was beaming with pride talking about Holly and how successful she is in NYC. He told Me, the front desk, the doctor and anyone else who would listen all about her. Proud dad he was and you could tell, not only in his words but with his expressions. He was an amazing, funny, loving person whom I will miss everyday... Love u Sulli when I see you again Ill bring some chocolates.

Josh was one of a kind. I thought of him as my second dad. He was absolutely genuine, so loving and the funniest man Ive ever known. I am thankful for the memories I will always have of him and my second family. My love is with you all.
