Alva Gray Wike, Sr. 73, of Cullowhee, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at his residence. Al was born in Angiers, NC on April 26, 1939 as the sixth of seven sons to Homer and Jessie Wike. The Wike's moved to Cullowhee when Al was a child and he graduated from Cullowhee High School. Al served in the United States Army. He was a licensed pilot. As a talented entrepreneur, Al began Tri State Utilities in 1974 in response to the Clean Water Act. Al was awarded the 1980 Wilbur E. Long, Jr, operator of the year award. Al was a gifted musician who could play any instrument but enjoyed playing steel guitar and piano best. He was also a great storyteller and gardener. He had a great appreciation for sports cars. Al was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Bruce, Clarence, and Homer Howard Wike. Al is survived by his daughter, Heather Teague, her husband Mark of Cullowhee; Sons Dale Wike, and his wife Elizabeth, of Cullowhee, and Gray Wike, and his wife Mary-Anne of Wilmington. Grandchildren Alexa and Samantha Teague, Thomas and Emma Wike, and Alden, Keller, and MaryJane Wike. He is also survived by brothers James, Orville and David Wike and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday July 21, 2012 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services with the Rev. Larry Bryson officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3:00 pm prior to the service at the Funeral Home.
