With profound sorrow and deep gratitude for his life of service, we announce the passing of Clay Alden Cogdill, 62, of Sylva North Carolina, who went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 22, 2026.
Born on February 3, 1963, Clay dedicated his life to faith, family, and the safety of others. A proud member of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol for 30 years, he served with unwavering integrity, courage, and compassion. Clay was known among his fellow troopers for his steady leadership, calm presence, and his commitment to protecting the people of North Carolina.
Clay’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. A devoted member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, mentor and friend to many. He believed deeply in the power of prayer, lived out his faith through acts of kindness, and approached every challenge with humility and trust in God’s plan.
Above all, Clay was a loving husband, father, pappy, and friend. He cherished time spent with his family, especially outdoors—fishing, horseback riding and wagon riding. His larger-than-life personality, sense of humor, and willingness to help anyone in need will be remembered always.
Clay is survived by his faithful and beloved wife, Cindy Dillard Cogdill; his daughters, Whitney Southard (Cody) and Shannon Cogdill; his grandchild, Maylee Grace Southard; his father, Dan Cogdill and his siblings, Mike Cogdill (Alicia) and Jan Gass (Donnie) and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Belle Cogdill.
The family will be receiving friends on Sunday January 25, 2026, from 2-5pm at Appalachian Funeral Home. A celebration of his life will be held on January 26, 2026, at 2pm, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church with honors by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Burial will take place at Henry-Cogdill Cemetery following the funeral service.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to Clay’s family, church family, and friends for their prayers and support. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church’s youth fund which was something close to Clay’s heart.
