In the quiet hours of May 30, 2025, David Lee Matheson, age 83, passed away in Sylva, North Carolina, concluding a decade-long battle with dementia — a journey his family remembers as a “long goodbye.” Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Elaine Matheson, and his brother, Richard. He is survived by his wife, Christina Buchanan Matheson; his children: Carrie Matheson Kitchell and Jamie, with their son Finn; Richard Matheson and Cori, with children Mia and Reed, and Bradley Alberti; and Sarah Terzich and Chris, with daughters Katherine and Emily. Dave’s family also includes step-children: Nikole Jasso and RJ, with children Jay, Beth, and Koleton; and Nathan Clapsaddle and Ashley. He leaves behind two brothers and a sister.
Dave was a standout high school football player and an unforgettable voice behind the microphone as a DJ. He combined these passions at the University of Wyoming, playing football while spinning records at WKOB. Dave later earned his BS and MBA from Western Michigan University, embarking on a rewarding teaching and coaching career that left an indelible mark on countless lives.
In the business world, Dave’s talent for connection propelled him to the top of Shakespeare Fishing and Tackle Company, ultimately serving as National Sales Manager. He later became part-owner and VP of Marketing and Sales at Chambers Belt Company, where he shaped the company’s growth until its sale.
Beyond his career, Dave’s heart belonged to family, his faithful dogs, the magic of Disney, music, and traveling new roads. He had a knack for making friends wherever he went — a gift he carried even as dementia stole much of his memory. His family and friends will always cherish the laughter, the stories, and the love he shared so freely
