Doris Painter Monteith

July 7, 1934 — December 29, 2023

Doris Painter Monteith, 89, of the Rolling Green Community, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, December 29, 2023.

A native of Jackson County, she was born July 7, 1934, to Burke Painter and Annie Frizzell Painter.  Doris was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Denver H. Monteith; grandson, Jordan Monteith; sisters, Ruth Snyder, and Mary Painter; brothers, Conrad, Walter, and Johnnie Painter.

She leaves behind her daughter, Lisa Monteith, of Sylva, grandson Jackson Monteith, and brother, Harrison (Ina) of Knoxville, TN, along with many nieces and nephews.

Doris was an operator at the telephone company until Lisa was born and also worked in home health and the clinics at C.J. Harris Community Hospital in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Doris was a teacher’s assistant in kindergarten at Camp Lab School in Cullowhee for many years and the receptionist at Smoky Mountain High School for several years.  She loved taking a nap with the kindergarten kids on their mats and also had a kind work or hug for the kids at Smoky Mountain High School.

Doris was a faithful member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church for 70 years.  She was a member of the church choir all 70 years, Sunday School teacher, President of the church choir, and co-led the children’s choir for 30 years. She truly loved all the ladies in her Sunday School Class.

She was devout in her Christian faith, read her Bible daily, and loved the Lord with all her heart and soul.  People could see Jesus in the way she lived her life.

Mrs. Monteith loved having morning coffee with her neighbor, Sue Adams; going to Belks with her cousin Betty Brintnall, doing word search puzzles, watching “The Golden Girls” and “Andy Griffith”.  She  loved her Friday appointment at Enchanting Hair Salon and to have her wonderful friend, Mary Sue Williamson, fix her hair and to talk with her friends at the salon.

Doris was a loving mother to Lisa and exceptional grandmother to Jackson. Jackson was her pride and joy and meant everything to her.

After a fall, Doris spent the last 5 months at Skyland Care Center.  She loved the staff and they loved and pampered her. She was “Nana Doris at Skyland and always wanted hugs.

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 2, 2024 from 6-8pm at Appalachian Funeral Home. Her funeral will be at Scotts Creek Baptist Church on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 3pm.  Reverend J. D. Grant and Reverend Mike Farmer will officiate.  Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
