George Eddie Ashe , 78, passed away Friday, January 30, 2026 at his home in the Weyehutta Community of Cullowhee following a period of declining health. Eddie was born in Jackson County on September 10, 1947, to the late Eldon Bartley and Daisy Mull Ashe.
In addition to his parents, Eddie was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Ruby Bennett and Wanda Jean Carter, and one brother, Kenneth Eldon Ashe. He is survived by one sister, Claire Peek-Dills of Bryson City. Eddie is also survived by two sons, Glenn Ashe (Tabby) and Devin Ashe of Cullowhee; two daughters, Rachel Ashe of Georgia and Aimee Sumner of Sylva; and one step-son, Brian Gilder (Robin) of Sylva.
Eddie was a Vietnam Veteran who served as a Tank Commander during his tour of duty. After leaving the service, Eddie worked primarily as a mechanic and had a reputation for being one of the very best around. When he wasn’t fixing cars, he was racing them. He could be found on a dirt track somewhere bringing home the trophies. Eddie was kind and humble, and a help and friend to all. In return, he was blessed throughout his life with an abundance of friends and family who will miss him dearly.
