James "Max" Blanton, 95, of Sylva, North Carolina, passed away on June 9, 2026, after a courageous journey with Alzheimer's dementia. Born on March 18, 1931, in Sylva, to James Roy Blanton and Cora Parris Blanton, Max lived a full and vibrant life rooted in the mountains of Jackson County, surrounded by the people and places he loved most.
Max was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ralphine Nicholson Blanton; his sister, Helen Blanton Brooks Bryson; his brothers, Cecil Blanton, Vernon “Speck” Blanton, Andy Blanton, and Robert “Cotton” Blanton; and his nephew, Jerry Brooks.
Max grew up in the Addie Community alongside a large and close-knit extended family. From an early age, he had a way with people, a quick wit that could light up any room, and an adventurous spirit that put a twinkle in his eye.
Max enlisted in the US Army alongside his lifelong best friend, Bill Shuler, through the Army's "buddy system," a program designed to keep friends together during their service. The “buddy system” didn't quite work out as planned. Max was stationed in Boston and later Korea during the Korean War, while Bill ended up in Germany.
After an honorable discharge, Max spent two years in Darrington, Washington, working in the lumber industry but the pull of the Smokies called him home to Sylva, where he barbered for a few years before beginning the defining chapter of his working life: the US Postal Service. For thirty years, Max served as a rural route carrier, navigating the winding roads of Jackson County and getting to know the community, making him a welcome sight at every mailbox along his route.
Max married the love of his life, Ralphine, and together they built a home on his family’s property, where Max had grown up. Their home and its impressive grounds became one of Max's greatest sources of pride. His yard was nothing less than immaculate, a showcase of native flowers and trees that reflected his deep appreciation for the local flora of western North Carolina. Even as his dementia progressed in later years, Max was still talking about planting his garden and tending his yard.
Max was an extraordinary athlete, pitching softball well into his sixties, an avid golfer, and a dedicated outdoorsman whose life followed the fishing and hunting seasons. Whether casting in the wilds of Ontario, Canada, or camouflaged in his Georgia deer stands, Max cherished this as a time with friends well into his nineties. Max organized over fifteen fishing trips to Ontario’s Kagianagami Lake, bringing along many local friends for adventures that surely produced as many tall tales as they did fish.
After retiring from the Post Office, Max and Ralphine discovered a love for bus tours, traveling with his brother, Andy, and his wife, Shirley, all over the United States.
Max was a proud member of the Dillsboro Masonic Lodge and the American Legion Post in Sylva, organizations that reflected his commitment to his community.
Max lived ninety-five remarkable years, and while dementia may have dimmed his memory in the end, it could never diminish the mark he left on everyone who knew him. He was a veteran, a friend, a brother, a jokester, a gardener, a fisherman, a hunter, and above all, a man who loved people and making them feel known. May he rest now in the peace and grace of God, reunited with those who went before him, in a place where the gardens are always in bloom, and the fish are always biting.
The family invites all who knew Max to celebrate a life that was lived fully, joyfully, and with an unmistakable twinkle in the eye. He would have wanted laughter, a few good stories, and maybe one more joke for the road. A celebration of life will be held at Appalachian Funeral Home on Friday, June 19 at 5:00 pm. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00 pm until service time. Burial will be the following morning at 11:00 am at Addie Cemetery. Rev. Mike Farmer and Rev. Charles Dean will officiate.
Max’s nephews will serve as pallbearers: Chad Brooks of Denton, Texas, Rob Brooks of Gallatin, Tennessee, Greg Harwood of Sylva, Jerry McConnell of Gainesville, Georgia, and Doug Anderson of Hoover, Alabama, alongside Max’s dear friends, Randy Fox and Keith Parris of Cullowhee.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Addie Cemetery Fund, c/o Buff Creek Baptist Church, 1274 Mineral Springs Drive, Sylva, NC 28779.
