It is with deep respect and heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of LV Mathis, who departed this life peacefully on May 29, 2026, at his home in Tuckasegee, North Carolina. Born on May 24, 1936, in Jackson County, LV lived a life marked by unwavering faith, devotion to family, and a love for the outdoors.
Throughout his 90 years, LV exemplified what it meant to be a good Christian man, striving each day to live by his faith with sincerity and grace. LV was a longtime member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church. His faith was not merely a private matter but was expressed through his active involvement in the church and through his joy in singing at different churches in the community and beyond, traveling with his wife Mary to share in this ministry during various occasions.
LV’s skills as a carpenter reflected his dedication and craftsmanship, serving with distinction at Mathis Construction. Yet beyond his professional achievements, he was an avid outdoorsman who delighted in hunting, fishing, camping, shooting skeet, and exploring the country by RV. His adventurous spirit and love of nature were a defining part of who he was and the legacy he leaves behind.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Mary Walker Mathis, whose partnership and love were the cornerstone of his life. LV is also survived by his sons, Alan Vaughn Mathis and Lewis Vernon Mathis; and cherished grandchildren Ashley Rae Mathis, Dar Ehren Mathis, and Spenser Dane Mathis.
LV was preceded in death by his parents, Spirgeon Mathis and Lettie Mae Mathis, whose memories undoubtedly live on in the family he so deeply loved.
Visitation will be held on June 6, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Appalachian Funeral Services, located at 165 Skyland Drive, Sylva, NC. The funeral service will follow immediately at 2:00 PM in the same location. Burial will take place at Shook Cemetery immediately following the chapel service.
As we honor LV Mathis's life, we remember a man who was defined by his faith, family, and fervent love of the outdoors—a true son of North Carolina whose legacy will continue through the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
