Mary Ellen Beck Moody

Mary Ellen Beck Moody, 82, of Sylva, NC, passed away peacefully on May 2,, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Mary was born on January 27, 1944, in Qualla, NC, to the late Thad and Edna Beck.

Mary loved her family and community. She was active in the First Methodist Church, Garden Club, and Downtown Sylva Association. She was a devoted wife, mother, Nana, and friend.

She was truly a kind soul—the sweetest person many ever knew, with a sense of humor that could brighten any room. Mary devoted her life to caring for others, always placing their needs before her own. She had a special gift for making everyone feel seen, valued, and supported—and for making them feel like part of the family. Mary brought out the best in people, usually while making them laugh along the way. Her joy was contagious, her laughter unforgettable, and her love, warmth, and lighthearted spirit will be deeply missed and always cherished.

Mary is survived by Maurice Moody, her beloved husband of 61 years; her children, Mark Moody (Leigh Ann), Melissa Saulisbury (Tommy); and four grandchildren, Rachel Moody, Campbell Moody, Hunter Saulisbury and Chase Saulisbury.

Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Sylva, North Carolina, on Saturday, May 9th, with the funeral service immediately following at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Sylva, NC, or the American Cancer Society.
