Muriel Ann Whisnant Smith

Muriel Ann Whisnant Smith, age 91, passed away January 3, 2024. She was born September 11, 1932, in Morganton, NC to the late John Lloyd and Ellie Mae Smith Whisnant.

Muriel graduated from Shelby Beauty College in 1952 and received her stylist degree from the American Hair Design Institute in New York. She was the former owner of Artistic Hair Styles and Classic Hair Salon. Muriel loved her church where she served on various committees and was a member of Ruth Sunday School Class and Ruby Daniel Group.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Warren Michael Smith (Teresa) of Bryson City; grandson, Jordan M. Smith of Bryson City; great granddaughters, Julie Smith, Samantha Smith; several nieces and nephews; special niece, Rita McCoy Hoglen; special nephews Tracy Chapman and Ty Chapman, sister-in-law, Opal Moore; brother-in-law, Donald Chapman; and special friends, Jane Perry and Jan Lindsay (Ronnie).

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Warren C. Smith; and thirteen brothers and sisters.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00PM, Friday, January 12, 2024, at First Baptist Church of Sylva, 669 W. Main St. Sylva NC 28779.  The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Muriel’s name to First Baptist Church of Sylva Together We Grow Fund and/or United Christian Ministries of Sylva, 191 Skyland Dr. Sylva NC 28779.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Appalachian Funeral Services.
