Born in Lackawanna, New York, Nan was the beloved daughter of Robert and Christine Berry.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Ronald Smith of Sylva; her loving children, Landon Smith, Lee Smith, and Corey McQuiston; two grandsons Andy and Robbie; and her faithful furry sidekick, Molly. She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Lois Horton.
After beginning her career as an office manager at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., Nan met Ron Smith and chose to devote herself to her dream of being a mother.
Nan was a devoted companion to her husband, Ron, and the heart of her family. Her three children relied on her daily for guidance, reassurance, and the comfort of her steady presence. Her wisdom and enduring care were a source of strength that will be deeply missed.
As a homemaker, Nan created a warm, welcoming home with an eclectic, old-fashioned charm that reflected her creativity, Swiss heritage, and love of music and family. She took great pride in managing almost every aspect of the household and knowing that her family was well cared for.
Nan was also a talented artist who found joy in creating jewelry, intricate beadwork, and handmade crafts, many of which she shared through Dogwood Crafters or gifted to friends and family. Each piece reflected her patience, creativity, and attention to detail.
She was a valued member and leader within the Dogwood crafting community, known for her kindness, willingness to listen, and readiness to help others. Her peers recognized her leadership by electing her President of Dogwood Crafters. Though she later stepped down due to health concerns, her commitment to the community remained strong.
Nan formed lasting friendships both within and beyond the crafting community, including a cherished bond with her older sister. She treasured these relationships deeply, and they were among the greatest joys of her life. She will be remembered with affection by all who knew her.
Nan’s legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched through her generosity, creativity, and unwavering love for her family and dear friends. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
