Odell Haskett

Odell Haskett, 97 of Sylva, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024 after a short period of declining health. Odell was born May 16, 1926 in Jackson County to the late William Edward and Laura Shook Haskett. Odell worked at Mead corporation and later Jackson Paper for over 35 years.  In retirement, Odell enjoyed “loafing” around town visiting friends, gardening, eating breakfast at McDonalds/Bojangles/Burger King while congregating there with his friends and spending time with his family. Odell worked in a bomber factory as a teenager during WWII and then served in the US Army during the Korean War. At the time of his death, he was a member of East Sylva Baptist Church.

Odell is survived by his son, Tim Haskett (Donna); grandchildren, Andrew Haskett, Joseph Haskett (Bryce), Samantha Haskett Pepper (Luke); great grandchildren, John Haskett “J.H” Pepper, Leigh Elizabeth Pepper, James Parker Haskett; brother, Orville Haskett (Jean); sister-in-law, Flora Haskett. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, Odell is preceded in death by his wife, Jimmie Lee Blanton Haskett; brothers, Jim Haskett and Vernon Haskett (Mildred); sisters, Ethel Haskett Wilson (Charles) and Minnie Haskett Cabe (Paul).

A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00pm on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at East Sylva Baptist Church. Rev. Scott Courtney will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00-4:00pm prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Baptist Children’s Home in Clyde, NC or to the Haskett Phoenix Endowed Scholarship at WCU for students who have aged out of foster care or orphanage care.
