Oliver Edward
Smith
March 4, 1945 – April 24, 2026
Oliver Edward Smith, known fondly by family and friends as "Ed", entered into his Heavenly home on April 24, 2026. He was born on March 4, 1945 to Oliver and Dorcas Smith.
On May 3, 1968, Ed married Margie (Buchanan) Smith, and they had almost 58 beautiful years together. During that time they had five children, which then led to them having 10 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
The beloved husband provided for his family by working for 32 years at the NC DOT where he was affectingly nicknamed "OE Smith".
He was preceded in death by many loved ones, some of which included his parents, and his siblings including Dora Blanton, Zora "Jane" Edwards, Betty Smith, Dorothy Bullman, William (Bill) Smith, and Robert (Bob) Smith.
He is survived by many as well, of which the most important to him is his lovely wife Margie. He is also survived by his last remaining sibling, Barbara Randleman. This list also includes all five of his children, which includes Chris (Tammy) Smith; Travis (Gina) Smith; Angie (Greg) White; Jeff Smith; and Shane (Ople) Smith. This also includes his grandchildren Keith, Alex, Austin, Joe, Riley, Kayla, Morgan, Cody, Braylon, and Lena; and his great-grandchildren Austin, Jasper, Rhett, Oliver, Evelyn, Myles, Rylee, and Noah. Honorable mention goes to the "fur babies" Dino, Gismo, Buster and Princess of whom Ed was very fond of.
His services will begin with visitation at 1 PM on Thursday, April 30th, at Appalachian Funeral Home in Sylva, NC; with the funeral to begin at 2 PM; which will immediately be followed by the graveside service at East Fork Cemetery off Gospel Drive.
Ed was a member of Old Savannah Baptist Church. Guests to his funeral will be blessed by hearing the preaching of Austin Frady and Chris Smith; and the singing by the lovely Martha Patterson.
Ed will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and remembered for his quick wit and stubbornness, his love of family, and his unwavering strength and dependability. While his loss will be felt for years to come; he is now walking the streets of pure gold, talking non-stop for all who will take the time to hear his vast wisdom and unending supply of stories. For that, his family can only say, "Thank you Lord".
