Ronald “Ronnie” Edward Setzer, a devoted Marine, loving father, faithful man of God, Master Fly Tyer and cherished member of his community, passed away peacefully on February 4th, 2026, at the age of 74.
As a proud Veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps, he served with great distinction as a Lance Corporal in the 8th & I Marine Barracks “The Commandant’s Own” Drum and Bugle Corp in Washington, D.C. As one of the Buglers, he was entrusted with specialized ceremonial duties for his unit. He served his country with honor and courage, living out the values of duty, integrity, and selfless service. His time in the Marine Corps shaped not only his character, but also the way he lived his life—steadfast, disciplined, and always willing to stand up for others. Guided by his faith, he believed in doing what was right, even when it was difficult.
He was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church and served his community as a former member of the Sylva Fire Department.
Above all else, Ronnie was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He took immense pride in his wife, Brenda Setzer, his children, Sheila Setzer and Amanda Bowers, and his grandsons, Cody Allison and Jackson Bowers. His greatest joy was being present for his family—offering wisdom, sharing laughter, and serving as a constant source of strength, encouragement, and prayer. His love was unwavering, his lessons enduring, and his presence deeply felt.
To those who knew him, Ronnie was dependable, loyal, and compassionate. He lived his faith through his actions, believing in hard work, honor, and caring for others. His legacy lives in the lives he touched, the values he passed down, and the example of faith and service he leaves behind.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard Rufus Setzer and Zenia Carroll Setzer and a brother Kenneth Setzer.
Ronnie is survived by his wife of 51 years, Brenda Setzer; his children, Sheila Setzer (Dale Broom) and Amanda Bowers (Chris Bowers); and his beloved grandchildren, Cody Allison and Jackson Bowers, who will carry his memory forward with love, gratitude, and faith. Ronnie is also survived by his brother Lee Setzer, his sister Doris Rogers and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind two dear friends, Gary Frye and Robert Dumond and his furry sidekick, Levi.
A service to honor Ronnie’s life, faith, and military service will be held on Saturday, February 7th, 2026, at Appalachian Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 12:00–1:00 p.m., with a memorial service to follow.
Though he will be deeply missed, we find comfort in knowing Ronnie now rests in eternal peace with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
