Sarah Louise Cuthbertson Davis, 75, went to her eternal home on Friday, October 30, 2026. Born June 24, 1951, she was the second of four children of Claude Cuthbertson and Edna Trice Cuthbertson of Crossnore, N.C. Born and raised in Avery County, she grew up among her many relatives there. Living on a farm gave her a great appreciation for simplicity and a love for the outdoors and the beauty of the land. She maintained a horse there so that she could always go back to her roots.
Sarah graduated from Avery County High School in the first graduating class of the newly consolidated high school. She attended Carson-Newman College and Western Carolina University. While at WCU, she began work at C.J. Harris Hospital (now Harris Regional) as a switchboard operator and progressed to computer programmer as technology came on the scene. In 1985, she started work with the Jackson County Public Schools, from which she retired in 2022. She loved her work and the people with whom she had the privilege of working with throughout her career.
She loved the Lord and His church. She was a member of Sylva First Baptist, where she considered it a true blessing to be able to be a servant. She served in many ways, including deacon, young adult teacher, youth and children's Sunday School teacher, WMU Director, GA leader, and served on numerous church committees. In addition, she served as Tuckasegee Association GA Director for several years. Sarah was a founding member of the WNCBF, a Baptist network for Western North Carolina. She served as chair and many terms as secretary. She was privileged to sit on the Board of Directors of NC Baptist Retirement Homes and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of NC Coordinating Council, where she was the chair of the State Nominating Team.
Sarah is survived by her husband of 49 years, Jim; a son, James "Jamie" Davis, and his wife Sabrena; two grandchildren, Wyatt and Adalyn Davis, all of Sylva. She is also survived by a brother, Steve Cuthbertson, and wife Kim; niece Rhiannon Cope (Dustin) of Crossnore; Gracie Cuthbertson of Tennessee; nephew Patrick Cuthbertson of Nashville, TN; sisters-in-law Alisha Cuthbertson of Tennessee and Lorene Cuthbertson of Crossnore; great-nieces and nephews Marley Jones, Dawson Cope, and Camden Cope, all of Crossnore; and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved brother, Claude Lee, and sister, Estelle.
Sarah's grandchildren were the delight of her life. She supported them unwaveringly in all they did. She especially enjoyed watching them excel at sports and attended every game that she could. They provided her with the warmest blessings that any grandparent could ever hope for and cherished their time spent together.
The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Sylva on Friday, November 6, 2026 from 1 pm-2:30 pm with a memorial service to follow beginning at 2:30 pm. Senior Pastor Dr. Joe Yelton and Revered Ed Beddingfield will be officiating the service. Sarah's remains will be laid to rest at a future date in Crossnore, NC at the Cuthbertson Family Cemetery.
