Wayne Thomas Brooks

Sylva - Wayne Thomas Brooks, 80, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at Charles George VA Medical Center.

Wayne was a lifelong resident of Jackson County and a son of the late Ray Claude and Virgie Nations Brooks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Toby Brooks. Wayne was an employee with Nantahala Power and Light Company which later changed to Duke Power. He later retired from there with numerous years of service. Wayne loved wood carving, deer hunting and making knives.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Shirley Ann Battle Brooks; a son, DuWayne Brooks (Teresa); step-daughter, Kim Hall; step-sons, Brian Hall and James Ensley (Rena); grandchildren, Jason, Jesse, Joey and Samantha Brooks, Heather Flesch, Kayla Waldroup, Derek Hall, and Haylee and Kaylee Smith; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services with Pastor Jeff Waldroup officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 6:00 p.m. prior to the service. A private burial will be held at Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
